HERLAND uses drone technology and 3D modelling to bring early modern landscapes to life. These digital tools allow the project to document forests, gardens, hunting parks, and agricultural sites connected to women in Sweden, Denmark, and northern Germany—detailed visualisations of the spaces where women worked, experienced, and interacted with nature. Drone recordings provide high‑resolution footage of historical sites, while 3D modelling transforms this material into immersive digital renderings of landscapes, buildings, and natural features.

 

The goal with these tools is to digitally document the locations and sites connected to women in Northern Europe, making it possible to visualise patterns of movement, resource use, and environmental change. By producing digital reconstructions and visual aids, HERLAND helps researchers and the public better understand the geography, topography, and environmental settings of early modern life—revealing aspects of women’s experiences that textual sources alone cannot show.
